The Division of Cardiac Surgery within the University of Alberta is dedicated to reducing the burden of cardiovascular disorders by providing a full spectrum of prevention and treatment. In collaboration with other cardiac care services, the Division provides a comprehensive and solid foundation for cardiac surgery training and research. The Division has a long history of training academic surgeons by high volume exposure to a continuum of state of the art cardiac care services and has experienced a number of milestones that are considered Canadian firsts including the first long-term successful living donor lung transplant in Canada in 2001. Reporting to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Darren Freed, Associate Professor, the Clinical Research Associate will assist in establishing and leading a clinical trial that will examine the safety and efficacy of a novel ex vvio lung perfusion (EVLP) machine. In collaboration with the PI and research team, the incumbent will be responsible for conducting and overseeing the EVLP run, collecting and interpreting data, and disseminating research findings.

Duties

  • Conducts the EVLP run; prepares the perfusion device, initiates the run, evaluates the lungs using protocol specified parameters, collects data, processes samples, terminates the EVLP run, and delivers the lungs to the recipient operating room for implantation
  • May participate in procurement of donor lungs if required; procurement may take place within or outside Alberta if required
  • Oversees operations and quality of work regarding all areas of the clinical trial including ethics applications, data collection, data analysis, and preparation of dissemination materials
  • Maintains research databases including collecting, organizing, and entering research data
  • Acts as a resource and point of contact for stakeholders internal and external to the Division
  • Writes research proposals and prepares applications for funding; writes research reports, abstracts, and manuscripts
  • Prepares presentations and publications; presents research findings at seminars, stakeholder meetings and conferences
  • Organizes and leads journal clubs and working groups to discuss relevant methodological issues
  • Assists graduate students with their research associated with the profusion of lung and heart organs prior to transplantation

Qualifications

  • Must hold an MD from an accredited medical school with completed training in cardiac surgery and/or a Clinical Fellowship in either adult or pediatric cardiac surgery
  • Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Cardiac Surgery
  • Must be eligible to perform surgical assists in Alberta
  • Experience in cardiothoracic transplantation required
  • Experience in conducting clinical trials, including data collection, analysis, and presentation is preferred
  • Proficient in initiation and conduction of EVLP, organ evaluation during EVLP, and selection of viable organs for implantation
  • Proficient in donor organ procurement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience in abstract/manuscript writing and presentation

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Agreement, this position has an initial appointment of one year, with the possibility of extension, and?offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be found at รวยด้วยบอล Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of $74,084 to $101,888. Salary will be?commensurate with experience and qualifications.
